Positive: First of all, the HOST, Sandra, wonderful wonderful woman! It feels like you're staying with a family. I suspect that this hostel is part of a house and half of the family, which would sometimes come up during breakfast, live downstairs or on the other side. Regardless, it was never a bother, it's a beautiful, cozy and open property. Breakfast was wonderful, I appreciated the full spread and the cook/cleaner, she's a wonderful woman as well. They were just SO hospitable and warm and helpful. I was REALLY nervous coming to Belem, for the very first time ever to Brazil or South America and scared about dangerous etc.. the hostel is located in a good spot of the city, theres a grocery store/main church/caru ice cream/McDonalds/amazonian park right next to it. I wont lie, it still didn't feel super safe, kinda dodgy all the time for me, but it was fine. The door has a lock and iron bars on it, as do the windows. Inside feels super cozy and warm and like home to be honest. The air conditioning was AMAZING. Eating breakfast with everyone around one table can feel a bit too intimate but I loved it. During the day time though the hallway does get exceedingly hot, so you have to be in your room/kitchen with AC or out. I also was really worried this was a scam property as it didn't have many reviews, seemed to be too good to be true, too new: I CAN ASSURE YOU this is not a scam. This is a wonderful family business with a wonderful family behind it, and them trying their very best to make your stay exceptional, cozy, warm, and delightful. I can honestly say that I had a great time. No major complaints.

Negative: My only big complaints were that there were two bathrooms, one of which was broken and if the main bathroom by the kitchen was closed we'd have to use the broken one which only had water bottles and no light, and a TON of mosquitos. The host warned me and apologized profusely, Belem tends to flood between 1-4PM daily and something happened with the pipes etc. So it was totally understandable, but I just wish that didn't happen. Additionally, the main working bathroom I had some issues with, it was not fully closed off so you could hear people walking in the hallway/kitchen/eating talk and vice-versa they can hear you poop and shower. The wall is paper thin. And because theres also an opening theres no strong AC in there, a light fan, so all the wood feels very humid, it generally just felt super humid and super squished (its a tiny bathroom with a shower). Last, the common space didn't feel very cozy as theres a room in it, so you cant really hangout there or be loud in the evening as theres people sleeping IN the common room (separated by a door). Finally, in the dorm room, they had some hiccups the lamps are magnetic so wouldn't stay/work and would fall constantly, every second. There was no shelving to put things on or charge things, and there are no lockers to store things. These are all just my preferences. And one superficial thing, I didn't like how narrow the hostel was it's one long hallway essentially from the front door to the kitchen with rooms/bathroom along the hallway. I would have wanted a more open-concept, but this is barely important. I guess, in short, I was just expecting a bit of a North American or European big hostel vibe, kind of more like a Generator or OneFam and there were just some things that aren't usual, BUT it's a different country and it's a house-turned-hostel so it's also understandable.

Summary: Amazing wonderful stay with a wonderful host in a new hostel in a Belemian townhome, some old quirks
